It is a key plank in the United Nations’ war on drugs. Originally, lunched by a resolution of a special session on drugs of the UN’s General Assembly in 1987, the annual awareness day was founded to mark the centenary of China’s early efforts to combat the trade in opium – widely regarded as the start of the international war against drugs.

This marks the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Trafficking in Human Beings, a global phenomenon that Pope Francis has repeatedly condemned, describing as a wound on the part of humanity. The unions of the Superiors and the General Superiors of Roman Catholic Religious Institutes have chosen February 8 as the Day of Prayer and Awareness against the Trafficking of Human Beings.
